TutorialI did everything you wanted me to do: registered, confirmed, logged in. So now what? Now you can start to contribute. You will be able to:
Edit pages? Yes, that's right. We trust you that much! This tutorial will tell you how to do that. Don't worry you will not have to learn HTML or other fancy stuff ('cause we wouldn't trust you enough to do that). Just a short note on the basic principle: This webpage is a wiki. Like wikipedia.org it relies on its users to add more information and review the articles. We made it easy for people to do that (you only need to register) hoping that as many people as possible use the opportunity to share their knowledge about the islands and participate in the trade register. ContentsEditing a wikipageIf you like to edit a page, just log in and click on that As soon as you have done that an editor window will appear at the bottom of the page. The text will look quite different from the published version you can see above, because the text written with a special wiki syntax. OverviewClick Basic editorThe basic editor will display a row of little icons, that give you a formatting example (see column with Editor syntax). You can click those buttons to apply bold print on highlighted text as you would in Word however it will not appear in bold print right away but surrounded by the 'code' for this particular formatting. Once you feel like a pro you can hack those symbols in as you write. This table gives gives you a quick reference but below everything will be explained in more detail.
Save, Preview and Save minor editTo save your changes you need to finish your edits within 24 minutes. You will get a warning 1 min before time is running out. You can then Save or Preview your changes to get another 24 minutes of editing time. If you ran out of time but you still want to post your changes just highlight all the text in the editing window (Ctrl + A), copy it (Ctrl + C) and paste it (Ctrl + V) after logging on to the site again. Please, preview your changes before you save them and make them thereby public. Every saved version of the wiki page will be automatically backed up. - So if you accidentally deleted all text, forgot to hit Ctrl + Z to reverse this change and accidentally hit save, it is not all lost! Just tell the webmasters and they will make things all right again. So, if you find a little typo in your new published text, you can edit and save the corrected version. This will create a new file with the new version on the server of the site. We do encourage you find and fix typos, but please, use Save minor edit instead of "Save" to keep the number of back up versions small. Headings

Tables can also be used to group two pictures horizontally.
You can reference links to (internal) wikipages of louisiades.net and to other places in the internet (external link).
Cross referencing within the wiki is particularly easy. Just put the name of the wikipage in two sets of brackets - e.g. a link to startpage: Home.
((Home))If the word 'Home' is inside a bit of text and you would rather like to say 'Homepage' you can make a different word than the actual wikipage name the link:
((Home|Homepage))Generally all pages have the same name as their link in the Mainmenu on the left side. Be sure to use the exact same spelling otherwise you will create a new page.
If you do like to create a new page you can just put a new term in two sets of brackets and on the published page you will find this term followed by a questionmark. New term?
Clicking on that ? will give you the chance of creating a new wikipage.
The new page will be orphaned. That means it will not automatically be embedded in the hierarchical structure of the other wikipages and you will not find the new page linked in the left side mainmenu. But you can still find the page by searching for it in the 'Search bar' on the top of the page below the 'login' fields.
If you like to create a link to a page that does not belong to louisiades.net - e.g. a link to an article at Wikipedia.org or PNG Tourism
[http://www.website.com|A term that becomes a link] [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wiki]A term that becomes a link
You can create bullet lists by starting each paragraph of you list with an asterisk *
*arbitrary example x *arbitrary example ü *arbitrary example q
For ordered lists your paragraghs need to start with a hash symbol #
#orderly example one #orderly example two #orderly example three
Now this is a bit tricky. Clicking on
or
(file gallery) and following the instructions is actually pretty straight forward. But the first option doesn't let you choose from files that are already on the server and the second option doesn't let you add and edit the picture attributes.
| Image source | You will have to provide an internet address/URL as a source for the picture. So you could insert pictures from wikipedia or your own homepage. Be careful where the pictures are from: If you don't have the rights for that picture (like photos you have taken) and they are not public domain (like pictures on wikipedia would be) you cannot show them on other pages without asking - or paying. | |
| Alternate Text | Alternate text is text that people can see, who browse without graphics - like yachties with satphone might or people at the Internet Bakery in Misima. People who browse with graphics will see the text when hovering the mouse pointer over it. | |
| Height and width | You only have to fill these out if the image you are referencing is not in the size you want it to be. Rhea's advice: ALWAYS use graphics in their original size. A browser is not a graphics processor and webspace and bandwidth are not for free! So if you have a 1024x720px picture and you want it to be 300px tall, resize it on your computer in an appropriate program and THEN you put it on a website. It will look much better this way and loads much faster! | |
| Link | If you enter a URL here people who click on the picture will be sent to this address. It is also very useful if you have a big picture and it needs to viewed in full size for some reason: Just enter the link that takes you to the big picture. | |
| Link Rel | Here you can decide whether the link entered above opens in the same window, a pop up window or a new tab etc. So don't worry about it. | |
| Alignment | Image alignment in the page. (left, right, center) Uses HTML IMG tag. This works well. | |
| Float Alignment | Image alignment in the flow of the document. (left, right, none) Uses CSS float property. Works not very well, so use the other way of alignment. | |
| Description | Shows a text below the picture describing what you see. Just enter the same text as in "Alternate text". | |
| Image Map | Don't worry about that. With an image map people can click on parts of the picture (e.g. a face) and are redirected to a page (e.g. a personal homepage). | |
| CSS class | Here you can apply a style that is predefined by one of your admin geeks. The plan is: If you enter the term 'frame' it will display your picture with a nice white frame border. But so far that doesn't work. | |
| Submit | Click it and make that window go away! | |
After the pop-up window for the file gallery has opened you can choose from the list on the left side which gallery folder you like to view. Mugshots holds pictures of people, snapshots contains pictures of the country side. Illustrations are any graphics but photographs. If you like to upload a picture that you took, please resize it so the long side is 280px long before you upload it. If you are not sure where your picture should go, upload it into Unsorted.
{img src="tiki-download_file.php?fileId=47&thumbnail"
alt="" link="tiki-download_file.php?fileId=47&display"
rel="shadowbox[g];type=img"}
It will look much better if you delete some of that gibberish so it looks like this
{img src="tiki-download_file.php?fileId=47"
alt=""}
And now it would be very nice, if you can add an Alternative text at alt=""
"This should be much easier.", you are thinking now. And so do we. But it isn't. Sorry.
If you like to have all the same options that you had in the 'insert external pictures' window you must combine the code you get from the file gallery with the other option. Just copy tiki-download_file.php?fileId=47 out of the reference line src="tiki-download_file.php?fileId=47&thumbnail" and insert it into the "Image source" line. Then you can fill out everything like explained before and submit.
Now you are probably very confused and don't want to ever insert any pictures ever into these webpages. If you don't want to put up with all that confusing s...tuff just send us your pictures and tell us where they should go and we will do the rest.
Let's you reference your sources - e.g. 'The Australian Bureau of Statistics', websites, articles or books.
To be completed.
Just scroll to the bottom of the page of your choice where it says "Post new comment". Then fill out the fields asking you for the title (e.g. Praise for Pana XY) and your actual comment (e.g. Man! I love this island!). Now hit Preview and proof read what you have written (this is an optional but highly recommended step). Finally click on Post.
Now every one can read your deep thoughts about Pana YX Island.
