Panapompom
Approximate Position: Lat/Long: 10°46'S / 152°24'E
OverviewAs of October 2009, Panapompom is a port of arrival with a customs officer stationed at the island. Various rumours are circulating that this may change in the near future, and there have been allegations of some creative fees and charges being levied at this location which you do not find at other ports. Best to check this out and get information in writing from the PNG Customs department before you arrive. Apart from that Panapompom is a beautiful island with a vibrant community.
AnchorageWe recommend anchoring at Nivani Island when visiting Panapompom. It is only a short ride by dinghy from the beautiful anchorage lying off an uninhabited beach. Exploring the IslandWalksThere is a nice 1h walk from the South side of the island across to a village on the other side with an elementary school. It will take you through the jungle and palm groves and along the beach. Just ask the locals for the track to the school. The teachers are always happy to take coloring books, pens, exercise books, chalk and other school supplies.
